| And it came to pass that Moses was on his way down from the
Mountain with the Twenty Commandments which God had charged him with delivering
to his People, when he paused to rest. The twenty stone tablets upon which the
Commandments were engraved were heavy, and had made him weary. While he rested
he read them once again. The first ten, though difficult to keep, seemed to
make very good sense. But he was at pains to understand the others. For they
did speak of strange things of which he had no knowledge, such as supermarkets
and baseball caps and computers. This was because God, in His infinite wisdom,
had looked far ahead, and had provided Commandments which He knew would be
necessary hundred of generations years hence. But Moses, unaware of this, and
wearying at the thought of carrying any farther ten heavy Commandments which
would be of no use to his people, left them on the Mountain and continued on
his journey with just the first ten. Commandments Eleven to Twenty, buried for
centuries on the dusty slopes of the Mountain, were recently unearthed. For the
edification of all they are printed in full below, in the hope that, even at
this late hour, people will respect them and follow God's will. |
